bio: a bit of a biography. i have practiced yoga and meditation at different points of my life. my most recent practice has been pretty consistent since 1999. i practice iyengar yoga. i certainly do not consider myself an expert, though it is a topic i take very seriously and have studied. i am not a yoga teacher, although, i have filled in for my teacher on a few occassions. i am keeping this yoga blog for a number or reasons. first of all, to experiment with a different style of blogging, next, in a hope it will enrich my practice - by focusing my reading and by keeping my focus on my daily practice - on and off the mat, and lastly, in an attempt to provide a resource for new and experienced yoga practitioners - a resource that will contain links to what i find interesting, informative, etc., about yoga admittedly, filtered through my own biases. i keep another weblog _monk in case you are interested in the more mundane events of my life, or a potpourri of random thoughts.

yoga is being introduced in some pe classes

from the article:
"Had I had yoga, I would have been a much happier P.E. person," said Judi Flannery, who has taught yoga at several public schools in Oxnard. "I was not a runner, not into competitive sports. If I'd had yoga, I would have blossomed."

of course, not all agree
"It's an affront to my Christian faith," said Doug Posey, a Thousand Oaks father of three and a pastor at Calvary Community Church in Westlake Village. "As a parent who still does have some belief in the public school system, I don't think it's necessary to use physical exercise that's an introduction to an Eastern religious way of thinking."

i feel a major failing of the PE classes i had as a youth was that they gave me the impression that physical activity was only for athletes. partly because of this, i lapsed into inactivity as an adult and only recently discovered the joy of yoga, inline skating - more active physical activities. perhaps yoga might show kids that there are physical activities that are beneficial (and even fun) even if you are not the captain of the football team.

the narrow mindedness of some that would oppose yoga in the name of christianity- especially how it must be taught in a high school gym class - is amazing.

a bigger concern for me is the qualifications of the teachers. if they bring in qualified yoga teachers to teach it, that's one thing - but i'd be a bit leery if the rank-and-file gym teacher became a yoga teacher for a week out of the semester., although i must say, the thought of the drill sergeant inspired gym teachers i had for my pe classes, teaching yoga is kinda funny..."now drop and give me chataranga dandasana"
