bio: a bit of a biography. i have practiced yoga and meditation at different points of my life. my most recent practice has been pretty consistent since 1999. i practice iyengar yoga. i certainly do not consider myself an expert, though it is a topic i take very seriously and have studied. i am not a yoga teacher, although, i have filled in for my teacher on a few occassions. i am keeping this yoga blog for a number or reasons. first of all, to experiment with a different style of blogging, next, in a hope it will enrich my practice - by focusing my reading and by keeping my focus on my daily practice - on and off the mat, and lastly, in an attempt to provide a resource for new and experienced yoga practitioners - a resource that will contain links to what i find interesting, informative, etc., about yoga admittedly, filtered through my own biases. i keep another weblog _monk in case you are interested in the more mundane events of my life, or a potpourri of random thoughts.

if we call yoga a "practice" what are we "practicing" for?

to do the perfect padmasana?
in case it's an event in the athens olympics?
cause swimsuit season is around the corner?

this book by judith hanson lasater gives another answer. one practices yoga so the lessons learned on the mat can be applied off the mat. after all, even if one practices an hour a day, that still leaves 23 hours per day one must deal with all of life's other issues. what is the use of being calm, peaceful and patient in savasana if one cannot be that way with one's spouse, children or co-workers? i must find and re-read this one myself!

p.s. the "pose to practice" idea came from a suggestion from kate

and, in the yogic tradition of giving credit to those one has learned from, in addition to the previously cited inspirations for this blog (this book by rebecca blood and bread, coffee, chocolate, yoga), another blog that as inspired me is david's blog. david does practice yoga, although his blog is mainly about music, with other topics sprinkled in. i was inspired by, and aspire to, the quality of links and the value of his blog as a resource in his chosen topic.

i am adding to the left column a "post to practice" which i will update periodically, this is mainly a way to get myself to focus on a specific pose on which, for any number of reasons, i wish to focus

from an article on j. brown's site

Krishnamacharya teaches that yoga can be found in any chosen direction, course of action or object of observation, whether that be a seated meditation or a chocolate Entenmanns donut. Asana and pranayama just happen to be particularly fruitful vehicles for yoga because body and breath are our most tangible realities (granted some vehicles are more fruitful than others).

and
There is no linear progression to asana. No one pose is more advanced than another. To do a simple thing with ease, precision, and joy is infinitely more advanced then doing something complex without. To do something that hurts your body or in some way makes you feel inadequate is perhaps the most beginner thing you can do.

and
It is impossible to injure oneself practicing yoga. It is very easy to do so performing a posture. If one has injured oneself in practice then no yoga was happening and one ought consider modifying if not completely changing the asana or practice that caused the injury.

he sounds like a wonderful teacher

and of course, just because one is serious about a yoga practice, does not mean that one cannot have fun with it, or have a sense of humor about it.

for example: try one of these desktops to remind yourself of your practice while you are working on the computer. i picked the einstein one, which is a hoot. these desktops are courtesy of lululemon athletics the clothing notorious for their april fool's joke (pdf) which enraged some. when i first saw the ad in yoga journal, i was upset - when i found out it was a joke - i had a good laugh - at the ad and at myself for taking things too seriously...

and of course, there is this classic article from the onion. irreverent, perhaps - but serious should not equal somber...

what is the yoga tradition specifically related to asana practice?

an article in yoga journal states that the lineage of hatha yoga is not as clearly defined, nor as old as one might think. some of the material in the article comes from the book yoga tradition of the mysore palace by norman sjoman.

from the article:
Modern hatha yoga draws on British gymnastics? The yoga of Iyengar, Pattabhi Jois, and Krishnamacharya influenced by a potpourri that included Indian wrestlers? These are claims guaranteed to send a frisson of horror up the limber spine of any yoga fundamentalist. But according to Sjoman, his book is meant not to debunk yoga—but to pay tribute to it as a dynamic, growing, and ever-changing art.

i am not sure why, but some of the "yoga hybrids" i read about, such as shiva rea's yoga trance dance i feel are innovative and proof that yoga is a living tradition - and while yoga in the usa now may be greatly different than how yoga was traditionally practiced as part of the hindu tradition in india, this is a testimony of the power of yoga as a tool which can be adaptable to different cultures much as how buddhism has adapted to every culture to which it is introduced.

other hybrids, say, disco yoga, i am less optimistic about...

the difference? in one case, there is a respect and understanding for the tradition as indicated by this article, also by shiva rea. in the other case, it seems like a way to use the fashionability of yoga to cash in...

great article about yoga teacher, sarah powers' views re:yoga and meditiation. the article emphasizes that yoga is far more than merely a physical discipline - something, i feel many, even those who practice yoga miss, or at least forget about in their quest for the perfect Salamba Sirsasana :

from the article:
Sarah says that many people overlook the fact that mindfulness in meditation is the essence of yoga. "There is a saying that if you start with yoga you'll discover you have a mind to watch, and if you start with meditation you'll discover you have a body that's uncomfortable. So either place you start will lead to each other."

what i like about her words here and in other articles i've read is that she has her own way of teaching yoga which while incorporating other influences still stay true to the essence of yoga. far too many people only consider yoga a physical exercise, but as ms. powers points out regardless of what brings a person to yoga, a good teacher and a consistent practice will yield all the benefits of yoga.

one of my favorite quotes about yoga is: "your yoga practice will never be perfect; your yoga practice is already perfect."

i have tried to find the source of this quote, but the only place i can find it via a google search is in the archives of my own my other blog

my other inspiration to create specifically a yoga blog is bread, coffee, chocolate, yoga.

besides introducing me to nutella this is a great yoga resource and for my money one of the best blogs. period.

hello. this is my new blog. you may know me as mike from _monk. i am creating this new blog as an experiment. i was inspired to do so by this book by rebecca blood which states that the earliest blogs were mainly a collection of links with some commentary devoted more or less to a single topic. so while my other blog is more of an online diary (i.e. what i had for lunch today) this blog will attempt to stay true to the original format. as i said, this is an experiement - i don't want to monkey with the format of _monk, cause i like it as it is, but want to try this different form to see if it is satifying. past attempts at spin-off blogs have not worked for me; i hope this is different.
